In 1809, Finland became an autonomous
Grand Duchy of the Russian Empire, and
the ruble was declared the national
currency in Finland. On April 4th 1860, by a
decree issued by Alexander II, Emperor of
Russia, Finland adopted a currency of its
own, the markka. The same year a mint
was founded in Finland to mint Finnish
coins. In October 1864, the new mint, built
